Brussels -The European Commission intends to launch a substantial financial program to support Morocco in 2015 as part of the Mobility Partnership, European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos said.
This program shall enable migrants to have better access to health-care, vocational training, schooling for migrant children as well as support for migrant women who are pregnant, new mothers, or victims of violence, Avramopoulos pointed out in a written answer to a question of Belgian MEP Hugues Bayet on the EU support to Morocco’s new migration policy.
“In the long-run, it is crucial to support Morocco’s migration policy that aims at fostering the positive impact of migration on development, fighting irregular migration and trafficking and protecting the rights of migrants, while setting up a full-fledged asylum system”, the European Commissioner said.
The Commission is strongly committed to support the efforts of the Moroccan authorities to set up a genuine migration policy, including the creation of an Office for Refugees and the establishment of a system against human trafficking, Avramopoulos stressed.
He recalled that the EU and Morocco signed, in June 2013, a Mobility Partnership, which contains a set of political objectives and initiatives designed, among other objectives, to ensure that the movement of persons is managed as effectively as possible.
Shortly after, in September 2013, Morocco launched a new immigration policy aimed at ensuring full respect of human rights. In this context, Morocco is putting in place measures to support the integration both of newly regularized migrants and of recognized refugees.
