Friday, 29 May 2015

The Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad (CCME) is organizing a conference on "the Imam and the challenges of the European context" on 30 and 31 May 2015 in Marrakech. This conference marks the beginning of a series of meetings planned by the CCME on "Islam in Europe and the challenges of the living together."

Sixty Moroccan imams from France, Spain, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy, Denmark, Germany ... will participate in workshops which will be led by researchers, supervisors and specialists in religion.

What are the problems faced by young Moroccans from immigration? What motives drive these young people to join the conflict zones? What diagnosis to be made of speeches that dominate the intellectual and religious landscape of the Muslim community? What intellectual efforts deployed to understand the roots, contexts and challenges of these speeches? What courses for Imams to become aware of the new context and to face these issues? What communication alternatives to separate religion and the register of terrorism and extremism and prevailing stereotypes? ... And finally what religious discourse should be presented to young immigrants so they can live their religion in peace ... so many issues to be discussed at this meeting.

The approach to these issues necessarily involves a reform of the formation of the Imam. An open training in humanities, religions, languages and communication adapted to the realities of the European context.
