During this meeting, Mr Mostafa Chendid (Denmark), Mr Khalid Ghazali (Italy), Mr Youssef Sbai (Italy) ), and Mr Mustapha El Mourabit (CCME) will discuss the “Religious culture among Muslims in Europe: sources and transmissions”. The meeting will be wil moderated by Mr Abdellah Redouane (CCME member).
Mr Mostafa Chendid said notably that the devotion of European Muslims has been built around emotional and epitemelogical spects.
Emotional because of the ambition to preserve one’s heritage and going towards the other have diminished the communication of individuals with their environment and produced their social isolation. Epitemological because the European Muslim of Europe doesnt always have the necessary tools of the religious text in the literal sense
Mr Khalid Rhazali, sociologist, spoke about the sociological dimension of Islam in Europe saying that Muslims are called to prove that the Muslim religion is a social treasure.”
The sociologist also said concerning the european countries and heir relation to islam :
“in a society that makes the Christian religion prevail, the Muslim religious actor is in a weakness position since he negotiates out of the religious register”.
Mr Youssef Sbai, for his part, said European Islam requires knowing the Muslims and defining the content of their religious education.
“Europe has nearly 30 million citizens of Muslim faith but multiplicity of religious references.”
We have to make a distinction between « vertical and horizontal » religious education. “Vertical education, which is transmitted from a teacher to a student, is defined by its regularity and the ability to control. The transmittal is only embraced by 20% of the Muslims of Europe “.
“The horizontal approach of education, which represents 80% of the transmittal channels, is due to social networks and Internet and escapes to any control.
Mr Mustapha El Mourabit, for his part, talked about the core of the problem:”the lack of research in terms of history of -religiosity- in Europe which allows us to project ourselves into the future”.
He notably said “religion is a system of value that transcends time and space”, whereas religiosity is the “interaction between the individual and his religion ».
