Rabat: Mr. Driss El Yazami, President of the Council for the Moroccan Community Abroad (CCME), announced Thursday 27 february the celebration of the 70th anniversary of “Les Boucs” by Driss Chraïbi, published in 1955, the first Moroccan ever written novel on migration. The commemoration will take place in April in Rabat and Paris.
The event will be held during the International Book and Publishing Fair (SIEL) in Rabat from 17 to 27 April, and the Paris Book Festival (11-13 April), where Morocco will be the guest of honour.
The head of the CCME, made the announcement while at a meeting held to introduce the latest edition of the comic strip ‘Khaliya 3, d’ici et d’ailleurs’.
Mr El Yazami also announced that the coming year would be the centenary of the birth of the writer Driss Chraïbi in El Jadida.
Driss Chraïbi was born on 15 July 1926 and grew up in Casablanca before leaving for Paris where he studied chemistry. He was an avid reader and went into literature and journalism. He has written several books and has received numerous awards, including the 1981 Prix de l’amitié franco-arabe. The author passed away in April 2007 in Drôme in south-east France.
