Tuesday, 26 May 2015

An Islamic center in the US southeastern state of Florida has opened a free health clinic to offer medical services for locally uninsured and needy people in the area.

"We need to give back to the community,” the Islamic Center of Deltona president, Riaz Qureshi, told the Dayton Beach News Journal on Saturday, May 23.

"One of the teachings of Islam is: To serve almighty God is to serve humanity…This is one way of serving”. he added.

Qureshi was speaking about the free clinic, Masjid Maryam that was opened at the now two-year-old Islamic center in Debary.

Inaugurated on Sunday, May 24, the clinic will have doctors who will be available to see patients on one Sunday a month. The clinic will also offer limited lab services and prescription assistance.

This initiative also aims to break stereotypes about Islam and promote a culture of tolerance and coexistence.
