Third round of the Shubbak Festival to highlight Arab art in London

Monday, 13 July 2015

The largest Arab art and cultural festival in London is taking place between 11-26 July, featuring over 60 events set to take place in the city’s leading cultural venues.

The festival was founded by Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, and Zaha Hadid, the founder of Zaha Hadid Architects. The Shubbak Festival was last held in 2013, bringing in 50,000 attendees. This year’s festival hopes to attract an even wider audience.

As the first festival of its kind, Shubbak describes itself as “an opportunity not just for the Middle East curious, but for resident Arabs keen to learn more about their own region and share in its accomplishments.”

“Never before has the Arab world been more reported on in the media. Now is the time to hear from Arab artists who speak powerfully about what matters to them,” writes Eckhard Thiemann, Artistic Director of Shubbak, in the festival’s brochure.

Spanning 16 full days and featuring more than 60 events including concerts, performances, screenings, debates, exhibitions, and installations, the 2015 Shubbak Arab Culture Festival positions London as a global destination to witness and engage with the plurality of Arab cultural creativity.

In light of recent world events, the Shubbak festival takes on even greater significance. As well as initiating important dialogue surrounding current perceptions of the Arab world, it challenges stereotypes and breaks down boundaries/ With Press
