Snapchat reveals Mecca to millions on the holiest night of the Islamic year

Mobile application Snapchat's decision to dedicate its live stream to the Muslim holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia went viral, with hundreds of thousands of tweets on the topic.

Digital analytics site Topsy recorded more than one million mentions on Twitter alone, many Muslims showed appreciation to Snapchat for changing the misperceptions about Islam, commenting that it made a change from the usual coverage. "Mecca Live" was a hit with Muslims and non-Muslims alike across the globe

Every year, around 100 million Muslims make the pilgrimage to the Saudi Arabian city of Mecca. Snapchat Live curated snaps about Mecca from around the network and placed them in one feed, Al-Jazeera reports.
