Migration : The parisian "Collège de France » organizes a three-day meeting on the « migrant crisis »

Wednesday, 12 October 2016

The Collège de France in Paris organizes, in partnership with the foundation Hugot, from 12 to 14 October 2016, an academic seminar on "the Migrant Crisis" in Europe since summer 2015.

The prestigious French establishment says in a preliminary note that : »Since the summer of 2015, the massive influx of refugees from the Middle East is often presented in public debate as a "Migrant Crisis" that tests the security of European defences » adding « one can, however, argue the reverse – that this humanitarian challenge confronts refugees with the European crisis ».

« This calls into question not only the universality of human rights, but the history of the relations of societies to the major migratory movements that compose them » says a statement of the Collège de France which also says that « the implication that migration must be understood over the long term through a deliberately interdisciplinary approach will be the theme of the Collège de France’s Autumn Symposium ».

« Both voluntary and forced large-scale population movements will be examined in their historical, demographic, anthropological, biological, psychological, sociological, economic, geographic, linguistic and legal aspects. Going beyond the diffusionist model that has long dominated the archaeology of migration, the conference will examine the impacts of contact between migrants and societies and address in turn the concepts of diaspora, colonization, asylum, and refuge » says the statement.
