Hosted by the Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad (CCME), Moroccan experts have discussed ways to improve water scarcity management in Morocco.
The CCME organised a meeting of experts on Thursday 13 February 2025 to explore the scientific and practical alternatives available for improving the effectiveness of managing water scarcity in Morocco, as well as the contribution Moroccan expertise might make to ensuring water, food and energy security. The seminar is part of the ongoing coordination between CCME and Moroccans from across the globe in the areas of water, agriculture and energy, in order to benefit from the expertise of Moroccans in dealing with the situation of water stress and the impact of climate change on water resources.
More than 30 experts from prestigious universities and specialised international and UN organisations from the United States, France, Spain, China, Italy, Sweden, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Lebanon, Mexico, Côte d'Ivoire and Morocco, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Equipment and Water and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests of the Kingdom of Morocco, took part in this scientific meeting, which was opened by Mr. Driss El Yazami, President of the CCME. The panel addressed a variety of important issues, including: priorities and controls for optimal investment in non-conventional waters; the Water-Energy-Food Nexus; development policies, the social state and water governance; the role of Moroccans in financing, investment, partnerships and national capacity-building; the role of Moroccan skills abroad in improving the efficiency of water scarcity management in Morocco ; the role of scientific research and development, new technologies and artificial intelligence in the development of water resources; making the most of successful international experiences and the skills of Moroccans abroad to formulate new and innovative solutions to avoid water resource shortages in Morocco.
It is worth noting that the meeting is part of a series of scientific conferences, consultative meetings and expert meetings organised by the CCME to draft a report on the future of Morocco's water resources, the alternatives for dealing with structural water shortages, and the potential contributions of Moroccan expertise to practical proposals and efficient solutions for dealing with the crisis and improving management of scarce water resources in the Kingdom of Morocco.
