Migration: the Mediterranean flow continues for Italy and Spain

Tuesday, 28 July 2015

While debate about how to accommodate them rages in the north of Europe, a steady stream of migrants continues to arrive on the shores of the south.

Forty seven migrants were brought ashore at the Spanish port of Motril on Wednesday, children and a pregnant woman among them.

Hundreds arrive in Messina

580 refugees from sub-saharan Africa, Syria and Bangladesh were brought ashore in the Italian port of Messina after being rescued by the coastguard two days before.

They are among 1,400 picked up in a number of operations just off the coast of Libya on Monday.

The Geneva-based International Organisation for Migration says an estimated 150,000 migrants came to Europe by sea between January and July.
