Senate committee approves two immigration-related bills

Thursday, 09 April 2015

A Senate committee voted without fanfare Wednesday to advance two immigration-related proposals, paving the way for a floor debate.

The Senate’s Veterans Affairs and Military Installations committee approved Senate Bill 1819 that would end the practice of offering in-state college tuition to Texas high school graduates who are not legally in the U.S. and Senate Bill 185 to outlaw so-called sanctuary cities where local governments cannot approve policies to prevent law enforcement from asking about immigration status.

The Subcommittee on Border Security, which operates under the Veterans Affairs and Military Installations committee, heard hours of heated testimony on SB 1819 by state Sen. Donna Campbell, R-New Braunfels, earlier this week, including many immigrant students opposing the bill. The panel approved the bill on Monday. The subcommittee members listened to emotional testimony on SB 185 by state Sen. Charles Perry, R-Lubbock, last month and approved the bill Monday.
