Granted citizenship to 59,300 Moroccans by EU member states in 2012

Brussels( Map) - 59,300 Moroccans acquired citizenship of EU Member States, according to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

Out of these 59,300 people, 53 percent acquired citizenship of France or Italy, noted the Eurostat report.

According to the report, 818,000 persons acquired citizenship of EU Member States in 2012, up by 4 percent compared with 2011 and by 6 percent compared with 2009.

In 2012, the highest naturalization rates were registered in Hungary (12.8 citizenships granted per 100 resident foreigners), and the lowest in the Czech Republic and Slovakia (both 0.4 citizenship each).

Among the 28 EU member states, the United Kingdom granted citizenship to the most number of foreigners – 193900 persons, or 23.7 percent of all granted in EU. They are followed by Germany, France, and Spain.
