Wednesday, 26 November 2014

The Arab World Institute (IMA) organized in partnership with the community center of Paris, this Sunday, November 23, 2014 in the French capital, a meeting under the theme "Morocco Judaism: plural readings of a history" .

At this meeting, participants stressed that "the Moroccan Judaism represents, through more than a millennium of existence, a fruitful confluence and a successful synthesis of multiple cultural currents of the Jewish world: Judaism exiled from Spain and Portugal, indigenous Jewish communities of Arabic and Berber languages, refugees arriving on the shores of Morocco throughout centuries seeking a haven, noting that the Jewish community in Morocco was the largest in the Arab world. "

After recalling the commitment of the Jewish community in Morocco to the sultans, speakers highlighted its dynamism and its contribution to the economic development of the Kingdom, indicating that the members of this community have been associated with several industries.

Opening the meeting, the President of the IMA, Jack Lang recalled that the 2011 Constitution is unique in the world since Morocco claims the diversity and richness of its tributaries, including Hebrew, noting that the Kingdom is now a model of tolerance.

"This is an extraordinary wealth for a country to be fed by its tributaries," he said, adding that the Kingdom is experiencing a "cultural and intellectual miracle".

The participation of several artists from different generations in the exhibition-event "contemporary Morocco" reflects this cultural blending facing the Kingdom, said Mr. Lang.

The day was marked by the screening of the film "Goodbye Mothers" directed by Mohamed Ismail and that traces back the story of two families, one Jewish and one Muslim, and sheds the light on the period when Moroccan Jews immigrated in the early 1960s.
