The synopsis of the film was largely based on a series of painful live testimonies and the views of researchers on the details of what actually happened in the Rif in that period.

Tarik El Idrissi had already directed in 2012 the film "the road turns", which chronicles the Spanish occupation of the Moroccan Rif in the 1920s.
