Moroccan culture and art featured in the Mexican city of Merida

Monday, 12 January 2015

Moroccan culture and art will be featured in the Mexican city of Merida on the occasion of the Moroccan arts and cultural week organized within the activities of the "Merida Fest 2015" that were launched Friday.

This cultural week, organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Morocco in Mexico, schedules conferences, exhibitions and concerts and a Moroccan film series presenting the various facets of life in the Kingdom.

The organizers of the cultural week of the Kingdom in Merida are trying to make the  Mexican public aware of the different aspects of Moroccan culture, in order to promote knowledge of the country with which they share a historical cultural heritage still present in many aspects of the everyday life in the city.

The Moroccan week also includes an exhibition of photographs and Moroccan art under the sign "Moroccan Contemporary Art", presenting 38 works of art.

The exhibition includes ten works of visual artist Aziza Alaoui, who has been living in Mexico for over 20 years, and 60 images taken by French artist Patrick Mooney, born in Morocco and living in Mexico for over 25 years. The pictures are a chronicle of faces, landscapes, doors, windows and Moroccan cuisine.

According to the organizers of this cultural event, Morocco stands out as one of the countries that boast a rich creativity in the visual arts. From North to South, East to West, hundreds of Moroccans are in artistic expression, whether on canvas, ceramics, leather, or by any other means, a means of communication and confirmation of identity.

Moroccan artists, from all sides of an exceptional nature, contribute to the creation of a mosaic of contemporary art, says an introductory note of the exhibition.

In fact, since the second half of the last century, Morocco has seen the emergence of artists from the best art schools in Europe, including contemporary artist Moulay Ahmed Cherkaoui and Jilali Gharbaoui.

As for the Moroccan cinema cycle (January 12-15), four Moroccan films will be screened: "Where are you going Moshe?", "The angels of Satan", "Detention Memory" and "Juanita of Tangier."
