IOM: Morocco’s migration policy “already bearing fruit”

Thursday, 05 March 2015

The new migration policy initiated by HM King Mohammed VI "is already bearing fruit," said Wednesday in Geneva the Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), William Lacy Swing.

"I was happy to learn that 18,000 migrants were regularized so far, that is to say, they have the right to work and access to all public services," said Mr. Swing to MAP news agency following a meeting with Minister delegate for foreign affairs Mbarka Bouaida.

"More than 500 foreigners have received refugee card, according to the 1951 convention, and some 10,000 foreign students are studying in Morocco", according to Bouaida

She further thanked the IOM for the constant support it gives to the Kingdom for the revision of its legislation on migration and asylum, stressing that the new migration policy has resulted in a National strategy in this field.

Lacy Swing said he followed “with great interest the measures taken to implement this new strategy that the organization has supported.”

He also said he would like to pay a visit to the Kingdom to discuss with Moroccan officials the ways to strengthen cooperation between the two sides.
