Due to scarcity of resources used in the issuing of passports at Malawi Immigration Department, reports indicate that they will only be issuing passports to people in scenarios of emergencies, Malawi24 can reveal.
According to Department's Spokesperson, Martha Gondoni this will end when the situation normalizes and supply gets restored.
"We have run out of publishing materials and for that reason we have reduced ordinary production of passport. As of now only are a few exceptional are getting passports, for instance those who are sick and needs medical attention from a broad," said Gondoni
As it stands, Malawi24 understands that the materials which are imported are expected to be in the country normally this month end.
In November, the Immigration Department announced of new passports fees after the hike had made headlines about a month ago.
The ordinary Passport which lasts for 20 days to be processed had increased to MK48, 500 from MK15, 100.
The Express type of passports is now at MK58, 500 from MK25, 100 and takes 5 days to get done. The Emergency passport had been hiked from MK35, 100 to MK85, 500 and takes 2 days to be effective.
On the other hand, the Diplomatic passport which takes 5 days to be processed now at MK85, 000 to MK30, 100.
The hike had also seen the Service type of passport be pegged at MK55, 500 from MK19, 500 and takes 5 days to get fully processed.
