Rachel Bendayan, a Canadian of Moroccan descent appointed minister

The Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, reshuffled his cabinet on Friday, 20 December 2024, which included eight new ministers. Among the new Cabinet members, Rachel Bendayan, a Canadian of Moroccan descent.

Rachel Bendayan has been appointed Minister of Official Languages and Associate Minister of Public Safety, making her Canada's first federal minister of Moroccan origin.

She studied Law at McGill University and started her professional career as a lawyer in 2007, specialising in Commercial Disputes and International Arbitration. In 2019, Rachel Bendayan joined the Liberal Party and was elected federal MP for the Quebec province of Outremont. Mrs Bendayan has served in various policy positions and was named by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as a parliamentary advisor to the Minister of Microenterprise and Export Development, as well as a parliamentary advisor to the Minister of Small Business and Export Development.
