SIEL: presentation of the novel "Mrs Merkel's secret lover"

"Mrs Merkel's secret lover" (in Arabic) by the German-Moroccan writer and journalist Rim Najmi-recently published by Dar Al-Masriah Al-Lubnaniah-was presented on Monday 13 May 2024 at the CCME stand. The author answered questions from German-Moroccan producer and journalist Mohamed Massad.

According to Rim Najmi, her novel "could not have run the risk of being misjudged or misunderstood in a country like Germany, where "intruding" into the personal lives of celebrities is a common practice", particularly around the "inspired" character of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has been the subject of numerous caricatures and film features.

The novel's idea is to see Angela Merkel not as a strong woman, but as a "woman who is loved and desired". The thought came to her after an exchange she had with a fellow journalist about the policies pursued by the German Chancellor, in particular her decision to admit a million refugees on German soil.

When asked about the contribution of her writing to German literature, she explained that this question does not arise in her case, because to be included in this category, the work must be written in German by writers of foreign origin. "In my case, I write in Arabic, which is a contribution to Arabic literature, but I am still haunted by my migratory experience".
