On Wednesday 15 January 2025, a committee with members from all political parties released its report in which it suggests that dual nationals could lose their Swedish nationality under certain conditions. These include “committing crimes that threaten Sweden's security”, such as espionage or inciting rebellion.
Sweden's government wants to make the requirements and conditions for obtaining Swedish nationality more restrictive. These include an increase in the residence requirement from five to eight years and a proposal to double the cost when applying for citizenship.
"The time when citizenship was given without conditions is over. Citizenship needs to be earned “, said Migration Minister Johan Forssell during a press conference. Last week, the Minister reported “historically low” figures for asylum-related immigration to Sweden.
In 2024, 6250 asylum-related residence permits were approved in Sweden. This was the lowest figure since 1985.
To make the necessary amendments to the constitution, the current government will need to win the elections in 2026. A vote will then be needed in the next parliament to amend the constitution.
