Spain's Council of Ministers recently approved a Ministry of Integration, Social Security and Migration proposal to legalise the status of over 25,000 migrants who have been unable to legalise their situation due to Hurricane Dana, the storm that hit Valencia at the end of October and early November 2024.

The Spanish press reports that the principal goal of this emergency measure is to ‘’protect non-nationals from the most precarious situations and to prevent foreign nationals from falling into an illegal residence status‘’.

Under the new measure, migrants will be able to live and work in Spain for a renewable period of up to one year, with applications to be legalized having to be made within three months following the approval of the new measure. Foreign households who have lost a family member as a result of the hurricane will have their permit to stay for exceptional circumstances extended by a further five years.

In addition, the official Channel website quoted Ministry sources saying that study permits and temporary residence and work permits for foreigners living in the affected areas expiring between 30 June 2024 and 1 April 2025 will be extended automatically ‘’except in cases that are rejected for reasons of public order, security or public health‘’.
